1. Which character did you choose to base your composition on? Why did you choose that character?
My composition was based on the Star Wars character R2D2. R2D2 is a robot that is a character in a movie series called Star Wars. I chose this character because I thought it would be fun and interesting to abstract a robot and see the results after abstracting it. I also chose this character because it was one of the characters I knew most about out of the Star Wars characters.
2. What style of Cubism did you use? How can you tell, cite specific examples from your work for your justification?
The style of cubism I used for this composition is Analytical Cubism. You can tell because I simplified my character R2D2 into a simple shapes. It also resembles the original picture of R2D2/ you can identify the simplified figure. You can tell I used analytical cubism because I used geometric shapes like triangles and circles to simplify the original object.
3. What does Analytical Cubism mean? How does the artist create this style?
Analytical cubism is one of 3 types of cubism where an object/figure is simplified/broken down into geometric shapes. It is simplified but you can still be able to discern what the original figure was. It is also one of the less abstracted types of cubism out of the three. Artists create this style of cubism by analyzing the original composition and breaking it down into geometric shapes.
4. What does Synthetic Cubism mean? Describe how this is different than Analytical Cubism.
Synthetic Cubism is a type of cubism where the figure is 2-D and uses multiple types of media. This is different than analytical cubism because it is more advanced. What I mean by that is, you can continue onto synthetic cubism after you have analyzed the figure into geometric shapes. Some other differences are that synthetic cubism uses multiple media which gives it texture and also it is 2-D.
5. What is Hermetic Cubism? How does an artist create this style? What are the steps needed to create Hermetic Cubism?
Hermetic Cubism is a type of cubism where the original figure is abstracted at its most. This means that you will not be able to tell the original subject matter of the composition. Hermetic cubism causes the composition to look like a broken mirror or a crystallized figure. Artists first analyze the original artwork then they break it down into simple shapes and they overlap those shapes multiple times to create a Hermetic style artwork. The artists also use a neutral color palette.
6. How could you improve your project? Give specific examples with solutions on how you could fix them.
I could have improved my project by making the composition more abstract. I could have made it more challenging for myself by trying to make it hermetic or synthetic since I used the most basic type of cubism. I could have used simultaneity which is a technique to create a artwork from different points of view. I also could have made it Synthetic by adding different types of materials onto my composition. Lastly, I could have made it Hermetic by making it look like a shattered mirror.
